You know the end of the year is approaching when you receive numerous invitations for festive gatherings with people you normally only hang out with once a week. Point in case this Tuesday was a Christmas party with Vaughan's Japanese class, which I was strongly urged to attend. While students pay only 500 yen each month (about $5), the school put on an impressive spread of Japanese food & drinks, and even gave all of us individual gift bags at the end! Highlights of the evening were Yolaine's much-applauded rendition of a Jamaican song, Vaughan talking about his beloved in Japanese (social embarrassment is apparently part of the curriculum here) & all of us cheerfully singing 'Jinguru Beru' (Jingle Bells) in Japanese! A somewhat bizarre but great night :-). More parties are coming this Sunday and next week, bring it on...

I think Japanese have something with singing on parties... I just got back from Xmas potluck party in my Japanese language school and the teachers (almost all middle-aged women and one great girl of 25) spontanuously started to sing some japanese songs. At the end, they quickly copied some lyrics from a book and the head teacher started to play the piano... so surreal..
