A taste of Rome

Resigning from your job and travelling for six months doesn't do wonders for the finances - that's obvious. By the time we left Egypt it was becoming clear that our budget is getting teeny tiny at this point... All throughout the trip we've tried to be as frugal as possible: taking local transport, eating at streetstalls, sleeping in less-than-fancy accommodation and buying very few souvenirs. We splashed out a couple of times on gamedrives, but all in all the list of things we didn't see or do is quite impressive (= Masai Maara in Kenya, Serengeti National Park in Tanzania, gorillas in Rwanda, rafting the Nile in Uganda etc). So when it came to our week in Rome I was completely willing to forego tourist sights or guided tours as long as we could do one thing: EAT. Luckily Italian food is a favourite of both of us so this was a no-brainer! Some of the most enjoyable moments of our week were spent in the local supermarket, where my eyes nearly popped out of my head seeing the variety & quality of their fresh tomatoes, mozarella, prosciutto, loaves of bread and countless other Italian delicacies. Local markets were also a weak point but as we had strict limits on how much could be spent, restraint was in order. Still, each day in Roma is remembered by what I had for lunch and dinner, plus some gelato and ciocollata calda (wonderfully thick hot chocolate) thrown in for good measure. In the mean time V. sampled Rome's coffee and his favorite liqueur limoncello. After much internal debate I've come to the conclusion that my most delicious discovery is cacio e pepe - a simple but mouthwatering Roman pasta dish with sharp pecorino cheese and black pepper. La vita e bella indeed!

I don't see any meat on that pizza Vaughan. You're looking awfully excited over a bunch of veggies!

I think that the Italian wine has gone to your head. :o)

When you back?
