Last Saturday night our wonderful Iraqi friends Helmi and Athraa treated us to a feast of dishes so lavish & varied, it would rival a royal banquet! 2008 has been a year of real ups & downs for them and their three kids, but I hope that the overall balance of their resettlement to NZ has been positive. As a volunteer it's been quite an experience as well, especially during times when their despair and grief was so tangible it hurt everyone who cares for them. We're in for a few more rocky months in early 2009 so fingers crossed they have the strength & determination to keep on fighting...
